Lilly Conference 2021

By Polly Heinkel

The Original Lilly Conference for College Teaching took place on November 18-20, 2021 at the Armstrong Student Center. During this 40th year, the Howe Center for Writing Excellence (HCWE) Director, Elizabeth Wardle, was invited to host an interactive workshop along and deliver the pre-conference plenary.

Her workshop, Unpacking Expertise: Making Our Disciplinary Assumptions Visible & Accessible to Students, took college educators on a two-part journey to make their disciplinary assumptions visible to students. Professor Wardle’s plenary titled, Honoring Learning in Liminal Spaces: Designing Environments for Deep Learning Around Threshold Concepts, described the threshold concepts framework (Meyer & Land) and what it tells us about the liminal nature of deep learning, as well as the need for new ways of thinking about curriculum design.
