Remote Work Technology Toolkit

Here is a collection of Miami technology tools you may need to use in order to successfully work remotely.

Secure Wi-Fi Connection

VPN

VPN employs encryption and other security means to secure your data when using your computer through public network access (wired or wireless) off-campus. Miami uses a product called Cisco AnyConnect VPN. Each time you activate VPN you will be required to log in using DUO. Miami Softphone

A softphone is an application that runs on computers and smartphones that emulates your office desk phone. Miami has two options for softphones. To help you with deciding on what tool is best for you, please visit Guide: Choose a softphone app. If you have any issues with using a Miami office phone or softphone or need to update your functionality, please go to MiamiOH.edu/phones.

Jabber

Jabber allows devices such as smartphones and computers to act as a fully functioning phone on Miami's Cisco phone system. For instructions on installing the Jabber client on various devices, please visit the Knowledge Base: Jabber. If you have any issues with using Jabber, please go to MiamiOH.edu/jabber.

Webex

Webex is an all-encompassing collaboration tool that provides instant messaging, video and audio conferencing, file sharing, softphone capabilities, and calendaring. It also integrates seamlessly with many Google functions. Network File Storage (MUFiles/myFILES)

Network File Storage

Miami provides departmental storage and shared space using MUFiles, and personal storage space using myFiles. When accessing your Network file storage, (i.e., MUFILES/MYFILES, M:/drive, G:/drive, etc.) from off-campus, you will need to use Miami's VPN. Video/Voice/Screen Sharing

You should use the Cisco Webex Network Test to check the status of your network and the speed of your network connection and port connectivity. The test results are used to validate whether your current settings are optimal to run Cisco Webex services or not.

Webex

Webex is Miami's enterprise solution for video conferencing, online meetings, screen sharing, and webinars. It can be used as a stand-alone application or can be used within Canvas. It also integrates directly with Google Calendars. For information about how to use Webex and to set up a meeting, please visit the Knowledge Base: Webex. Google Workspace

Google Workspace offers powerful collaboration and communication tools that help faculty, students, and staff be more successful. It includes advanced controls, enhanced analytics and search, and enterprise-grade communication tools. These include:

  • Gmail
  • Calendar
  • Drive
  • Docs
  • Chrome
  • Google Chat
  • Hangouts

Remote Access to Select Business Functions

AppPortal

Miami's AppPortal technology streams applications to your computer or device, making the application appear as if it is running from your computer or device. Some of the applications that are available through AppPortal include:

  • Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop
  • Banner 8
  • Control-M
  • Kronos
  • Milestone

Internet Connectivity Assistance

For at least the near term, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), along with several cell phone carriers, are helping to provide individuals with internet access and special arrangements for their services. See the list below for some of these special offers.
