Artist Anna VanMatre kicks off lectures at art museum
Cincinnati artist Anna VanMatre will present "Earthkind-Humankind: The Conflict of Natural and Human Events As Artistic Inspiration" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Miami University Art Museum. Her talk is in conjunction with the exhibition series "Out of the Shadows: The Rise of Women in Art," which runs through Dec. 10 at the museum.

University Senate action Aug. 29
University Senate met Monday, Aug. 29, and heard reports from: Stephen Wright, report on the board of trustees' April 2011 and June 2011 meetings; Provost Bobby Gempesaw; and Steven DeLue, executive committee chair. Senate also approved the April 11 minutes of the election of the 2011-2012 executive committee and the April 18 full minutes of 2010-2011 University Senate.

Single transferable voting system explained
(Editor's note: This article, which first appeared in The Miami University Report Dec. 7, 1989, is reprinted here to explain the single transferable voting system.) The single transferable vote system is used in many Miami governance elections. While the voting system is complex, its goal is simple - to make as many people's votes count as equally as possible in electing someone.
