Miami University commemorates the 20th anniversary of 9/11

A host of events at Miami University this week commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

9-11 memorial posterView: Exhibition, through Sept. 30

  • At Miami Middletown's Gardner-Harvey Library and online: “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed the World” poster exhibit is a downloadable educational exhibition that presents the history of 9/11, its origins, and its ongoing implications through the personal stories of those who witnessed and survived the attacks. Told across 14 posters, this exhibition includes archival photographs and images of artifacts from the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s permanent collection. It explores the consequences of terrorism on individual lives and communities at the local, national, and international levels, and encourages critical thinking about the legacies of 9/11.The poster exhibition was developed by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy Demands Wisdom.

Visit, through Sept. 11: Memorial display, Farmer School of Business

  • Stop by the 9/11 memorial display of photos and names of those who died. Posters are displayed in the first-floor atrium of the Farmer School of Business. Names include those of four Miami alumni: Alicia Titus, Myra Joy Aronson, Todd Weaver and Kelly Ann Booms.

Sept. 10: Memorial Run and Stair Climb   

  • Army ROTC cadets will climb the stairs at Yager Stadium from 6-6:45 a.m. to honor firefighters and others who had to navigate the stairs of the World Trade Center. 
  • Air Force ROTC cadets will conduct a 9/11 Memorial Run around Cook Field from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The goal is to run nearly 3,000 total laps — one for each life lost on 9/11 and 13 more for the service members who recently died in Afghanistan. 

Sept. 11:  Moment of silence

  • In remembrance of those who lost their lives, Miami invites its community to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. EST, the time when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
