E-Campus Faculty Service Roles

You've probably heard numerous E-Campus "roles" mentioned in conversations with colleagues, chairs, and administrators. Read more about how each of the roles are defined and the associated responsibilities below.

E-Faculty

The term "E-Faculty" refers to any MU Regionals faculty or instructional-staff who teach, steward, and/or develop courses in partnership with E-Campus.

Course Author

Selected by the Department, a faculty member or collaborative group of faculty is identified to author a brand new course for online delivery. Working in close collaboration with E-Campus Instructional Designers, the Course Author(s) envisions, plans, designs, and creates a new course to be offered through online delivery.

Essential Responsibilities of the Course Author:

  • Maintaining the Master Course: making minor edits and updates over time
  • Partnering with E-Campus to ensure that content updates preserve compliance and regulatory requirements for course design and accessibility of course materials.
  • Attending Course Author meetings on e-learning industry updates and information
  • Communicating with Department Chair and faculty on course curriculum needs and edits
  • Serving as the first point of contact for Course Instructors with questions about curriculum or delivery
  • Notifying E-Campus when the course has reached the 3-year mark since it was last in course development to see if it has need of updates or revisions with the assistance of an instructional designer for a course refresh.

E-Campus is growing in response to the needs of MUR students to include more courses and cover a broader curriculum in an effort to serve the interests and demands of today’s college students that need access to learning in a flexible format. Online courses are routinely scaled up: either to offer multiple sections or to open the course(s) to non-majors. Scaling up also means that courses are often taught by multiple instructors. To accommodate this, we recommend that new courses are developed with ‘scaling up’ in mind, by multiple authors working together in order to design a course that reflects multiple perspectives and pathways for learning.

Course Steward

Selected by the Department, this is a faculty member identified to oversee an online course when the original Course Author is no longer available or the course has been assigned to a new course steward.

Essential Responsibilities of the Course Steward:

Course Instructor

Selected by the Department, this is an individual assigned to instruct and facilitate an online or hybrid course. Sometimes the Course Instructor is the Course Author/Course Steward. More often, this is not the case, especially as courses are getting scaled up to include multiple sections. Course Instructors are identified as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) through online interactions, communication and instructor presence in the facilitation of E-Campus courses.

Essential Responsibilities of the Course Instructor:

  • Contacting the Course Author(s)/Steward the first time they are scheduled to teach an online/hybrid course for insight and advice about curriculum and delivery
  • Utilizing course content for instruction, as it’s been previously developed by Course Author(s) in partnership with E-Campus
  • Facilitating student learning (in other words, teaching the course) by adding instructional presence to the course through: e.g. coaching, interaction, facilitation, teaching, grading/feedback, and engaging students in meaningful ways
  • Providing students with feedback on course work and grading submitted assignments
  • Submitting mid-term and final grades to Banner
  • Providing feedback to Course Author(s)/Steward and E-Campus about course updates and improvements

Online Program Assessment Coordinator

Assessment Coordinators are faculty in service roles who have been selected by the department with online programs to design, implement and monitor annual assessment goals and deliverables for student learning outcomes and online program effectiveness for their Department’s E-Campus Online Degree Programs. Reporting to the Chair of their department and the E-Campus Director(s), Assessment Coordinators work on identifying assessment strategies and utilizing assessment results to improve academic performance and the online student experience.

Current Assessment Coordinators:

  • Department of Commerce: Thomas Mays
  • Department of Education and Society (for PreK program): Tracey Hoffman
  • Department of Nursing: Suzanne Stricklin

Essential Responsibilities of the Assessment Coordinator in partnership with E-Campus Leadership:

  • Identifying departmental and program outcomes
  • Developing online program assessment plan
  • Developing online program curriculum map
  • Identifying course alignment with direct and indirect measures
  • Managing and implementing program accreditation & compliance reporting
  • Managing and implementing program reporting & analytics
