You can enhance your off-campus living experience by getting to know your neighbors and by being a responsible, considerate member of the Oxford community. Lay the groundwork for a positive relationship by introducing yourself within the first couple of weeks after moving in. 

Neighborhood Etiquette

Follow these simple tips for creating a neighborly environment:

• Say "hi": A simple "hello" or "how are you?" can go a long way in beginning to build relationships with your neighbors. Introduce yourself shortly after moving in and be sure to continue and grow those interactions throughout the year. Neighbors who get to know you a bit will be more likely to lend you a snow shovel or to bring in your trash cans if you forget.
• Give a "heads up" when needed: Let your neighbors know in advance if you will be throwing a party or going out of town. Be sure to exchange contact information in case questions or issues come up while you are hosting an event or are away. 
• Respect difference: Understand that not all of your neighbors may be other Miami students. Be aware that late night activities and certain outdoor decor may not be embraced by all who live in your neighborhood. Be respectful of your neighbors' right to a peaceful living experience as well. 
• Help out: If you see a neighbor struggling to carry groceries in or shovel snow off their driveway, ask if and how you can provide assistance. You may be amazed at how far these gestures can go in creating a positive neighborhood experience!
• Be polite and kind: Treat others with respect and consideration. Understand your actions affect the lives of those around you. 
• Watch out for each other: Watch out for your neighbors and their properties. Communicate potential or observed issues when they arise.

Behaviors to Avoid

Just as there are ways to build a positive relationship with neighbors, there are certainly ways to damage those relationships as well. Do NOT:

• Walk through other’s yards for personal convenience
• Lack the judgment to appropriately find a bathroom
• Deface or steal other’s property
• Damage other’s trees, shrubs and gardens
• Litter other’s yards, driveways and sidewalks

Oxford laws expect that residents will appropriately respect the property of others. No excuse is justifiable to damage or vandalize other’s property. Please call the appropriate resources to report and help stop unlawful behavior.
