Housing Accommodation Request Procedure

Miami is committed to providing a residential living experience that supports student success in academic and co-curricular interests. The Campus Services Center provides a wide range of residential living options. In some instances students may need housing accommodations due to disability related needs.

Requests are reviewed by the Housing Accommodation Committee which is comprised of staff from the Miller Center and Campus Services Center. When making determinations, the committee considers severity of the condition, timing of the request, space availability and all available campus support services. Examples of committee considerations include:

  • Is the request an integral part of of the treatment plan for the condition in question?
  • Are there other effective means that would achieve similar benefits as the requested accommodation?
  • Is the impact of the condition life-threatening if the request is not met?
  • Is space available to meet the student’s need?

The committee supports Miami’s commitment to the 2 year residency requirement and all on campus accommodations will be explored and exhausted. A diagnosis or medical provider recommendation alone does not guarantee the request will be approved. The committee meets bi-weekly and students are notified of a decision within 7-10 business days after a determination is reached.

Currently Affiliated Students: Please contact your Miller Center Coordinator for information on how to request a housing accommodation.

If you are not affiliated with the Miller Center complete the following steps:
  1. Affiliate with Disability Services.
  2. Submit disability verification that meets documentation guidelines.
  3. Attend an Access Consultation with a Miller Center Access Coordinator to discuss your accommodation request.
  4. Once steps 1-3 are completed and you are formally affiliated for services, your Miller Center Access Coordinator will provide instructions for submitting your request to be reviewed by the Housing Accommodation Committee.
Returning on campus students requesting a housing accommodation for the 2021-2022 academic year should submit requests no later than May 1st, 2021.

Appeal Process

To appeal a housing accommodation decision the following information should be submitted to SDS@MiamiOH.edu or your assigned Coordinator:

  • Written statement from medical provider that includes detailed explanation of why the recommended accommodations and/or support services will not mitigate barriers related to the student’s disability.

Additional information submitted will be reviewed by the Housing Accommodation Committee. Notice of a decision will be provided within 7-10 business days of committee review.
