The H.O.P.E. (Help Over the Phone Everywhere) line is available 24/7 for students to call for immediate support, crisis intervention, and stabilization from a crisis support specialist. The H.O.P.E. Line is not an answering service, but rather an extension of university services for callers.

FAQs

What do I do if I or someone I know is in crisis or has an urgent concern?

For an immediate and life-threatening psychological crisis, please call 911, Miami Police (513-529-2222), or present to the nearest emergency room.

If you find yourself in a non-life-threatening psychological crisis, you may call the Student Counseling Service (SCS) at 513-529-4634 for crisis intervention during our business hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a therapist assigned to provide crisis intervention during specific hours on a daily basis.

If the situation is so critical that it cannot wait for the SCS, for a psychological crisis after regular business hours on weekdays, or anytime during a University holiday or weekend, do one or more of the following:

Is the H.O.P.E. Line a confidential service?

There are limits to confidentiality when we are concerned about the imminent wellbeing of an individual or in the cases of reported child abuse. The H.O.P.E. Line shares call information with the Student Counseling Service so that we can provide follow-up intervention when/if necessary.

Can the H.O.P.E. Line replace my regular visits to my mental health professional?

This service is available for students who are in crisis, need immediate assistance to speak to a clinician, and/or have an urgent concern, to receive crisis consultation and information on emergency resources. It should not be used to replace, the regular, ongoing care of your mental health professional. 

Is the H.O.P.E. Line staffed by the Student Counseling Service staff?

No; the H.O.P.E. Line is staffed by off-site mental health professionals providing emotional support, assistance, crisis intervention and suicide prevention to current Miami University students experiencing emotional distress

Is there a cost to access the H.O.P.E. Line?

No; this program is financially assisted by the Joseph and Laura Klunk Family Foundation.

Is there a limit to how many times a student can use the H.O.P.E. Line?

No; a student can access the service as many times as needed. The H.O.P.E. Line may be used to supplement (if needed), but not replace the regular, ongoing care of your mental health professional.
