In Memoriam
The Scripps Gerontology Center mourns the recent death of Robert C. Atchley. Bob led the center for more than two decades. He was a pioneer in the areas of retirement research, continuity theory, and spirituality and aging. He will be dearly missed by several generations of gerontology students and colleagues at Miami University and far beyond.

Grant funded dementia care education available for Ohio nursing homes
The Eden Alternative, in collaboration with the Ohio Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman, is seeking Medicare and/or Medicaid participating nursing homes in Ohio that are inspired to make a difference in the lives of those who live with dementia.

Family satisfaction Miami-Minnesota collaboration published in the Journal of Applied Gerontology
Key factors for family satisfaction with nursing homes similar across states. In recent months, news headlines have included numerous investigations into cases of nursing home staff shortages and resident maltreatment — many of which were reported by the families of vulnerable residents.

Mentorship and collaboration: research making a difference in the lives of Ohio families
This summer Sara Stemen and Leah Janssen, PhD students in Social Gerontology, mentored five undergraduate students working on a statewide nursing home and residential care facility family satisfaction survey that provides data for Ohio's Long-term Care Consumer Guide.

The 2018 P.K. Whelpton Memorial Lecture examines the long-term impact of military service
Dr. Janet Wilmoth, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Aging Studies Institute at Syracuse University, will present the 2018 P.K. Whelpton Memorial Lecture. The talk will take place at 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 9, in 186 Marcum Center. The lecture, The Long-Term Impact of Military Service on Lives, is sponsored by Miami’s Scripps Gerontology Center. The event is free and open to the public.
