Winter Term Begins for CEC

Winter CampusThe 2018 Winter Term for the College of Engineering and Computing kicked off January 2nd and will go through January 27th. The term includes studying abroad, completing a program, conducting research, completing an internship, or taking an additional on-campus or online courses The winter term creates opportunities for students to expand their academic options.

Professor Alim Dewan of CPB is teaching two Unit Operations labs. “These courses consist experiment, computer controlled data logging, simulation in topics of process industries involving material & Energy balance, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid mechanics, reaction engineering, and process control. Students learn technical report writing and give oral presentations.”

Professor Jim Kiper and Professor John Femiani are are a team teaching Algorithms. Professor Kiper says “Algorithms are the essence of every computer program. It also includes learning about mathematical-based techniques for the analysis of algorithms in a systematic way. This is a tough course. We believe that having students concentrate on this one course for three and a half weeks in January will allow them to better master the subject matter.”

Junior Michael Siegert is taking Algorithms with Professor Kiper and Professor Femiani. Michael says “One of the biggest benefits of taking a course over the winter term is that it allows us to focus in on one particular subject, which can allow us to more deeply learn the subject. This is incredibly important for algorithms, which is at the core of computer science.” Michael is co-majoring in Computer Science and Interactive Media Studies.

In 2014, Miami became the first public university in Ohio to offer a winter term.
