Students take field trip to AK Steel Research Center

On Feb. 20, four students attended a field trip to the AK Steel Research Center, headquartered in Butler County, Ohio.

The students were met by 2017 Miami graduate, Katherine Bruce, who is currently a Research Engineer with AK Steel. Here, she manages several of their laboratories, as well as works on product development and the support of grain oriented electrical steels. During her time at Miami, Bruce also held two internships at the center.AK Steel field trip students with Katherine Bruce

She not only spoke to the students about the steel making process, but stressed the importance of internships, and how their benefits can be applied to the workplace. The students also had the chance to see laboratories and offices, as well as ask general questions about the career field.

According to Jayden Crutchfield, a sophomore mechanical engineering major, seeing engineers thriving in their environment inspired a passion for his future.

“Meeting some of the staff and being able to watch them work really motivated me to make sure I take each and [every one] of my classes [seriously],” said Crutchfield. ”...there will be a time I will have to apply those skills.”

Jerron Gray, a sophomore engineering management student, utilized the field trip to help plan his next academic move.

“I am currently deciding which type of engineering I really [want] to pursue," said Gray, “so I felt that [the field trip] would really help to get a close look.”

All students are encouraged to participate in field trips and other opportunities like this one as they become available.
