Miami University Fall 2023 Commencement

Academic Attire

Graduates are required to wear academic attire to their graduation ceremony. Academic attire includes; caps, gowns, tassels, stoles, cords and medallions, many of these items can be purchased at the Brick & Ivy Campus Store.

GradFest will be on November 2 at Brick & Ivy Campus Store.  Students will find everything they need for graduation and more!  Caps and gowns will be available for purchase this fall.

University and Latin Honors

​Students whose academic record the semester prior to their last semester qualifies them for University Honors and/or Latin Honors may wear these awards as part of their graduation regalia. Students qualifying for Latin Honors may wear a red and white Latin Honor cord; students completing the Honors College requirements may wear their Honors Medallion, and students graduating from the Honors College with University Honors with Distinction may wear the gold Distinction cord.

Each degree candidate will receive an email from the Registrar's Office requesting they complete the Diploma Address/Ceremony Attendance Form. Completion of this form ensures the diploma(s) is mailed to the correct address after graduation. To change a diploma mailing address after December 15, 2023, the graduate will need to email commencement@MiamiOH.edu. Diplomas are mailed out 5-7 weeks after the degree conferral date.

This form also asks degree candidates to select "I WILL" or "I WILL NOT" attend - to indicate their expected ceremony attendance. This greatly assists the university in planning for a commencement.

Even if not planning to attend commencement, the form must be completed.

Miami University now offers Certified Electronic Diplomas (CeDiploma) in addition to the hard copy diplomas, and graduates will receive a download link 5-7 weeks after the conferral date.

Arrival

Graduates and guests can enter the venue 90 minutes prior to the ceremony start time. Students should arrive no later than 2:15 p.m. with their cap and gown. Tables will be set up on the concourse and staffed by faculty marshals for each college.  Students should pick up their reader card and look for the location where their college will be lining up. There will be plenty of faculty marshals around to answer any questions.

Students will be seated in the arena by college.  All candidates for graduation will have their name called, will walk across the stage, and have their photo taken by photographers from GradImages. A representative from GradImages will reach out to the students within a few days with their photo proofs.

Parking

Parking will be available in the West Millett parking lot and surrounding lots.  Please observe the directions provided on signs as you approach the venue. Officers will direct guests to the closest parking available.

Accessible parking will be available near the venue. Signs will be posted to direct guests to parking and to an accessible drop-off location on the North side of Millett. A valid state-issued disability placard is required to park in accessible parking spaces.

Accessible seating is available on the court level and the upper level, both accessible by elevator. Please connect with an usher upon arrival and they will be able to assist you. Guests sitting in the accessible seating area are permitted one companion to accompany them in the accessible seating area.

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access

American Sign Language interpreters and live captioning will be provided. Interpreters are best viewed from section 5. Live captioning can be viewed on the Jumbotron or accessed on a personal mobile device at: MiamiOH.edu/CommencementCaptions

The Marcum Hotel and Conference Center is proud to offer space for a private Commencement Celebration either before or after the ceremony. Likewise, catering to various Oxford locations can be reserved as well. Call 513-529-3591 to inquire.

All items and persons entering Millett Assembly Hall are subject to security screening and inspection. 

To ensure the safety of all graduates and their guests, heightened security measures will be in effect throughout commencement ceremonies and events. We thank you for your cooperation with these important precautions.

Guests should expect a visual inspection of persons, bags, and clothing capable of concealing prohibited items. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Prohibited Items

As a general rule, any items that obstruct the view of other guests or that can be used as projectiles, that interfere with the comfort of other guests, or that are deemed inappropriate/hazardous by security are prohibited.

The following items are not permitted:

• Alcohol and/or Illegal Drugs
• Open Containers
• Coolers
• Backpacks
• Clothing with Profane, Inappropriate, or Abusive Language
• Noise Making devices
• Confetti, Streamers, Glitter, Balloons
• Mace or similar substances
• Signs, sticks, or poles
• Weapons of any type

Permitted Items

The following items are permitted in the stadium or arena for the ceremonies:

• Service Animals
• Food
• Cameras
• Video recorders
• Binoculars
• Seat cushions
• "Umbrella"- type strollers
