Candidates for provost position named; forums scheduled

Four finalists have been named as candidates for the position of provost and executive vice president of academic affairs at Miami University. Open forums are scheduled for each.

Debra A. Schwinn is associate vice president for Medical Affairs at the University of Iowa after having served from 2012-2016 as dean of the Carver College of Medicine there. She was on faculty at Duke University for 21 years, including as director of cardiovascular genomics in the Duke University Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy.

At the University of Washington from 2007-2012, she served as chair of the department of anesthesiology and pain medicine and as Allan J. Treuer Endowed Professor of Anesthesiology and adjunct professor of pharmacology and genome sciences. She is a practicing anesthesiologist.

Schwinn graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the College of Wooster, received her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, and completed her residency at the Hospital of the University of  Pennsylvania and a clinical fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. She performed five years of basic science research training at Duke University in α1-adrenergic receptor molecular pharmacology and biochemistry in the laboratory of Bob Lefkowitz (2012 Nobel Laureate, chemistry).

David V. Rosowsky is provost and senior vice president at the University of Vermont. Prior to joining UVM, he served as the dean of engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 2009-2013, and before that as head of the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University 2004-2009, where he also held the A.P. and Florence Wiley Chair in Civil Engineering. He was professor and Richardson Chair in the departments of civil engineering and wood science and engineering at Oregon State University 2000-2004, and assistant to associate professor of civil engineering at Clemson University 1994-2000. Rosowsky was a visiting scholar in the department of civil engineering at Johns Hopkins University 1993-1994, and an assistant professor at Purdue University 1990-1993.

Rosowsky earned a bachelor’s and master’s in civil engineering from Tufts University and a doctorate in civil engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He is a recognized expert in the field of structural reliability and maintains an active research program in wind and earthquake engineering.

Guillermo Vásquez de Velasco is dean and professor of art, media, and design in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at DePaul University. He previously served as vice provost and dean of the College of Architecture and Planning at Ball State University, 2015-2016; dean of the College Of Architecture And Planning and Professor of Architecture 2007-2015; and as executive associate dean of the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University, 2006-2007. He began at Texas A&M as an assistant professor in 1995.

Previously, Vásquez de Velasco held teaching and/or research positions at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and the Sagrado Corazón University in Lima, Peru. He has also worked as a professional architect.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture and urban planning from Ricardo Palma University in Lima, Peru; his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Toronto in Canada; and his doctoral degree in architecture from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands.

Jason Osborne has served as dean of the Graduate School and associate provost at Clemson University since 2015, where he is also professor of applied statistics.

From 2013-2015 he served as professor and chair of the department of counseling and human development in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville. He was also interim chair of health and sport science and co-director for the Center for Educational Research, Policy, and Evaluation.

While on faculty at Old Dominion University, 2011-2013, he served as assistant chair of educational foundations and leadership and director of graduate programs, Darden College of Education. Previous faculty positions include those at North Carolina State University, University of Oklahoma, University of Buffalo Medical School and Niagara County Community College.

Osborne earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Rochester, a master’s degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he also completed master’s level courses in epidemiology research methods, and holds a doctorate in educational psychology from SUNY-Buffalo. He practices translational applied statistics in his fields of study.
