2020 career development and university assessment award winners announced

Award winners for university assessment and career development were chosen this spring.

Excellence in Career Development Award

Patrick Lindsay, assistant lecturer of commerce in the College of Liberal Arts & Applied Science and of marketing in the Farmer School of Business, received the Excellence in Career Development Award.

The award recognizes faculty who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the development of the Miami University career community.

One of his nominators said Lindsay “is an excellent teacher and adviser who has worked with hundreds of employer partners. He clearly dedicates the great majority of his time providing career development services to undergraduate students.”

University Assessment Award

The Miami University Assessment Council has awarded its annual University Assessment Award.

The recipients are:

  • Stephanie Baer, assistant professor of art, for the art education program.
  • Anne Roma, director of the master of arts in social work program and visiting assistant professor in family science and social work, for the social work master’s program.
  • Joseph Carlin, professor, and Kelly Abshire and Rebecca Balish, both associate teaching professors, all in the department of microbiology.

The award recognizes outstanding contributions that faculty, staff, academic departments, and/or academic support programs have made to their improvement through full-cycle assessment.

The selection criteria include:

  • Clear articulation of assessed learning or other outcomes.
  • Clear alignment between outcomes and selected assessment measures.
  • Use of multiple measures (direct, indirect).
  • Presentation of collected evidence.
  • Involvement of key stakeholders (faculty, staff) in the assessment process.
  • Use of assessment results for educational improvement.
  • Educational improvement strategies tracked over time.

Each area will receive $1,000 to be used to advance its work on assessment, teaching and learning.
