Spring Career and Internship Fair offers students a chance to network, land jobs

Miami students interested in seeking an internship or full-time job will have the opportunity to interact with employers at the Spring Career & Internship Fair from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Millett Hall.

The career fair — open to all majors — is a great way to network with nearly 200 employers and alumni. Doors open at noon.

Miami's career fair in 2019

In 2018-2019, employers placed 62,270 internship and job postings on the university's electronic job board.

“Career fairs balance the required ‘high-tech’ job search methods with a human touch approach,” said Jennifer Benz, assistant vice president of Miami’s Center for Career Exploration and Success, which is located in 0045 Armstrong Student Center.

“Since there are so many employers on campus at one time, attendance can really save students time when navigating their job or internship search,” she said.

New this year, students can download the free Career Fair Plus app from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It features employer listings, interactive floor plan, event details, announcements for real-time updates and tips to help prepare.

For instance, the app:

• features a map for students to plan their career fair “flight plan," and employers can reach out to students ahead of time to invite them to their tables.

• connects to Miami’s career management system, Handshake, so participating organizations can share their company descriptions and available jobs or internships.

• allows students to mark any employer of interest as a favorite — adding a star on the map for easier navigation. Students can also mark which employers they visited, making it easier to track who they still need to see.Career Fair Plus app logo

Benz noted that while employers continue to recruit students at career fairs, they now have many other ways to connect with students.

“Faculty are increasingly incorporating real-world/industry-led projects into the classroom, which allows students to learn and demonstrate knowledge that can be witnessed by an organization in ways that directly relate to their respective organizations.”

Miami also holds a Diversity and Inclusion Network Event and a STEM Career Fair in the fall, as well as a Technology, Innovation, and Design Fair from 3:30-5 p.m. April 29 at the Armstrong Student Center Pavilion.

At the Regionals, a Career and Internship Fair will be held from noon-3 p.m. March 19 at the Harry T. Wilks Conference Center, Hamilton campus.
