Virtual events also include live interactions with admission counselors

Since the COVID-19 outbreak is keeping prospective Miami students from taking tours on campus, visiting with an academic adviser or attending an admission presentation in Shriver Center, Miami is taking those “live” interactions to them – online.

Miami’s admission office has rolled out these additional virtual services to high school students who have been accepted to Miami, as well as other prospective students. A virtual visit website, MiamiOH.edu/visit features a video-based virtual tour of the Oxford campus and other features students and families would see if they were visiting in person.

“We want students and families to have ample opportunities to speak with Miami representatives and current students and to see our beautiful campus,” said Bethany Perkins, director of admission. “During our Make It Miami events for accepted students, families explore campus and meet with faculty, students and representatives from various departments. Although nothing can replace actually being on campus, we want to come as close as possible to offering that personal interaction with an ability to see campus virtually.”

These virtual events also include information sessions with an admission counselor with live question-and-answer interaction, one-on-one visits with an admission counselor and live Q&A sessions with a panel of current students representing all academic divisions.

In addition, students can request to connect with Miami professors, academic advisers, career counselors or staff from the University Honors Program and the One Stop. Admission representatives also are available for live chats on the admission website during business hours.

Planning is underway for additional virtual events as academic divisions and other departments begin to offer their own information sessions and online chats. These events will be added to the virtual visit website as they become available.

Miami’s traditional admission cycle, like those at universities across the country, has been altered by the coronavirus pandemic. To provide the information and support prospective students need to confirm their place in the Class of 2024, Miami has made several adjustments, including moving the deadline for confirmations to June 1 from the traditional May 1.

Miami’s orientation for confirmed students in the Class of 2024, which traditionally starts in June, will be changed as well. Miami is building an orientation course in Canvas. After completing some of the course, students can schedule a video appointment with an academic adviser. Students will also engage virtually in real-time meetings with student orientation undergraduate leaders (SOULs) and their future classmates, just as they would if we were in person.

Prospective students wishing to connect with Miami University can visit Miamioh.edu/visit, call Miami’s admission office at 513-529-2531, or email admission@MiamiOH.edu.
