Miami Matters brings you five free, fun things to do at Miami each month. We've highlighted five activities for October on Miami's Oxford and Regional campuses.
Fridays, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28: Two Ways to De-Stress
Free Faculty & Staff Lunchtime Ice Skating or TGIF Yoga
12:10-12:55 P.M. Goggin Ice Center
Free ice skating, including admission, skate rental and an instructor for those interested.
12:10-12:55 p.m. Scott Hall
TGIF Yoga: Relieve workday stress and start the weekend fresh. Workshop includes breath awareness, stretches and guided relaxation. Participants can join the workshops any week.
Thursday, Oct. 13: Shideler Hall Ribbon-Cutting and Reception
5-7 p.m. Shideler Hall Lobby, Oxford
Noon-5 p.m. Building tours, student research posters, refreshments
Visit the newly renovated Shideler Hall, home to the departments of geography and of geology and environmental earth sciences, the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability, the Geospatial Analysis Center and the Geology Museum. A series of lectures will be held throughout the day – check out the schedule here.
Monday, Oct. 17: Sylvain Acher and Frenchaxe - Gypsy Jazz
7 p.m. Miami Hamilton Downtown
French native Sylvain Acher, guitarist and singer/songwriter, leads the four-piece band Frenchaxe with music drawing from diverse styles. “Original songs in French, simmered in a rich and accessible sauce drawing from spices like pop, jazz, funk, gypsy; kind of world beat. And, when we cook, we don't wear aprons,” Acher said.
Monday, Oct. 24: Meet the Candidates
6 p.m. Miami Hamilton Downtown
Hear from your candidates on the 2016 November ballot. Candidates for the following races have been invited: U.S. Senator, 8th District Representative to Congress, State Senator (4th District), State Representative (51st, 52nd, 53rd, 54th Districts) and the Butler County commissioners. Open to all.
Thursday, Oct. 27: Pumpkin Pride - Fall Community Celebration
5:30-7:30 p.m. 121 McGuffey Hall, Oxford
Celebrate the diversity of the Miami community and the bounty of the fall season.
Enjoy games, refreshments and other activities that welcome and celebrate Halloween in a fun, safe environment.
