10 tips for a healthy new year: Programs are free and the benefits priceless

Miami’s Benefits & Wellness team is excited to support you in your health and wellness resolutions. Check out the list below and let something spark your inner fire. Programs are open to all faculty and staff at no cost.

Move More:

1. Don’t just be fit for the new year, be “Fit 4 Life.” Check out the Fitness 4 Life workout space and fitness classes.

2. Join Team Miami 5K training group beginning Monday, Feb 13. Together we will support each other with weekly walk, walk-jog, or running sessions and complete the Red Brick 5K on Sunday, April 23.

3. Review our Healthy Miami ergonomic resources to see ways to be healthy at your desk, including desk stretches and tips for sit-stand desks.

Know Your Numbers:

4. Get an early start on your 2017 Healthy Miami Premium Discount Program steps. Log into your account and register for your biometric screening today.

5. Learn how to prevent heart disease and stroke. Get a quick check of your blood pressure at a free campus blood pressure screening.

De-Stress:

6. Plan a mini stress break in your day with weekly meditation sessions (10:30-11 a.m. Tuesdays, in 128 McGuffey Hal).

7. Check out your comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Resources include in-person, telephonic, and online information in areas of mental health, parenting, financial wellness, legal advice, grief, and much more.

Kick the Habit:

8. Quit or cut back with campus offerings of the American Lung Association’s Freedom from Smoking classes and/or visit our health plan at UMR for details on 100 percent coverage of cessation products.

Boost Your Immunity:

9. The flu season is late this year, and it is not too late to get vaccinated. Call the employee clinic in the Miami Health Services Center today to reserve your flu shot appointment. (9-3300)

10. Healthy eating, including lots of fruits and vegetables, can boost your immunity. Check NIH online for free recipes and cookbooks with delicious and heart healthy recipes.
