Miami Matters brings you five free, fun things to do at Miami each month. We've highlighted five activities for January on Miami's Oxford and Regional campuses.
Wednesday, Jan. 11: Winter Term Lean Fair
8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Armstrong Student Center, Oxford
Browse the booths, attend a breakout session, enjoy refreshments and win a chance at a door prize at the 2017 Lean Fair. Learn about Lean concepts and tools and Miami's approach to continuous improvement through activities, information booths and interactive courses presented by many different offices and divisions. Take away valuable ideas and practices to use in your daily work life.

Monday, Jan. 16: Communitywide Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration
11 a.m. Program begins, Shriver Center Dolibois Room, Oxford
10 a.m. Doors open, Complimentary Continental Breakfast
"Continuing the Dream in 2017." A communitywide celebration of the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. with guest speaker Tammy Kernodle, professor of musicology and affiliate faculty of American studies, black world studies and women, gender and sexuality studies. Kernodle served as a scholarly consultant to "Musical Crossroads," the inaugural music exhibit for the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Friday, Jan. 20:
6-10 p.m. IceFest, Free Family Event, High Street, Hamilton
6-8 p.m. Doggy Speed Dating at Miami Hamilton Downtown
Dogs from the Animal Adoption Foundation will be available for petting, cuddling and adopting.
Saturday, Jan. 21:
10 a.m.-6 p.m. IceFest
Noon-2 p.m. “Meet a Penguin!” at Miami Hamilton Downtown
Meet and greet — and take a selfie with — African penguins in this program presented by the Newport Aquarium’s Wave Foundation. Sponsored by the Lane Libraries and Miami Hamilton.
Tuesday, Jan. 24: Music Café moves from Fitton Center to Hamilton Downtown
7-9 p.m. Miami Hamilton Downtown
After 18 years at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts, the Music Café moves to Miami Regionals Downtown Hamilton. What is the Music Cafe? It is a performance opportunity for musicians of all experience levels in a warm, supportive environment. Each show consists of four 25-minute sets. Want to perform? Friday, Jan. 27: Reception and Awards Ceremony,Young Painters Competition for the $10,000 Yeck Award
4:30-6 p.m. Hiestand Galleries, art building, Oxford
Reception for the Young Painters Competition for the $10,000 William and Dorothy Yeck Award. Paintings by the 10 finalists are exhibited in the Hiestand North Gallery. Juror Jed Perl, artist, writer and critic from New York City, will announce the winners at 5:15 p.m.
Meet the 2016 Young Painter winner, Annie Ewaskio, at the reception and view her solo exhibition in Hiestand's Hull Gallery.
