Veterans Benefits Checklist

This checklist is designed to help you keep track of the steps you must take to secure the benefits you have earned through your service. Follow it closely to make sure you don’t miss any important steps or deadlines.
While most of these tasks only need to be completed during your application process, you must submit the VA Benefit Request Form every semester at Miami.
Because some of these items require gathering and submitting paperwork before the start of school, it’s important to plan ahead. If you are the dependent of a veteran, visit our Qualified Dependents page for the additional steps you must take in your application process.
If you have questions, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.
Apply for Benefits on VA.gov
Complete the application to apply for your education benefits or change your program/place of training if you attended another school using the GI Bill®. All students (including regional campus students) should list 301 S. Campus Ave, Room 121 Oxford, Ohio, 45056 as your place of training.
You can find a wealth of information, as well as the application for benefits, on VA.gov’s VA Education and Training Benefits page.
For Chapter 33/Post 9/11 GI Bill® students only, send a copy of your certificate of eligibility from VA to the One Stop via email at veterans@miamioh.edu, fax at 513-529-0003, or mail at 301 S Campus Ave, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056. You may experience a delay in payment from VA if you do not provide this information.
Apply for Admission
If you are a veteran using your benefits, you will need to apply for admission. If you are applying to an undergraduate program as a military service member with credits from your training, you will apply as a transfer student at either the Oxford or Regional campus. Graduate students should apply to their desired program through the Graduate School.
The application fee is waived for veterans and military personnel. No fee waiver is necessary. (The regional campus application fee is $35.00 while the Oxford undergraduate and graduate application fees are $50.00).
VA Education Benefit Request Form
Submit your VA Benefit Education Request Form every semester at Miami. Until this form is completed, Miami is unable to submit your enrollment to VA for payment of your benefits.
Transcripts
Make sure you have all your transcripts available, whether from the military or from another school.
Ohio Residency
Apply for Ohio residency, if needed. The Ohio GI Promise guarantees in-state tuition to veterans if they meet the requirements. Individuals using transferred benefits may qualify for residency based on GI Bill® Resident Rate requirements. Be advised that the residency reclassification application, and all supporting documentation, must be received at least three (3) full weeks before the first day of classes of the academic semester for which you are applying.
Yellow Ribbon Program
If you are classified as a non-resident student and have 100% Post-9/11 GI Bill® eligibility, you may qualify for the Yellow Ribbon program. Yellow Ribbon scholarships are limited and made available on a first come, first served basis per VA regulations. Please contact the One Stop (Oxford students) or Center for Veterans Services (Regional students) for further details.
