The most successful students take ownership of their education, and the Department of Justice and Community Studies has a significant number of resources that can help you take control of your own education.

Faculty Advising

Don't go it alone! The JCS faculty are here to help you complete your degree. Every student is assigned to a faculty advisor, and all students are welcome to visit with any JCS faculty member regardless of their particular assignment. Additional information can also be found on the web pages for each degree.

Successful students don't wait for an exciting career to come to them, they are constantly on the lookout for every opportunity. If you want to maximize your Miami degree right out of the gate, you should maintain an awareness of local and national agencies that are looking to hire new employees.

Scholarships: Corporal Olivas Valor Award

These scholarships are awarded to one or more students majoring in Criminal Justice.  Preference given to students who have previously served or are currently serving in the United States armed forces.

Criteria for Application Submission

  • Declared major in criminal justice (BSCJ or AASCJ)
  • A one (1) page essay that describes why the student is deserving of the award and a description of their previous or current military experience if applicable
  • Completed a minimum of 15 hours at Miami Regionals with a 2.5 gpa or higher
  • Demonstrate interest in future employment and/or leadership within the field of criminal justice
  • Provide a copy of their Degree Audit Report (DAR)
