Senate News, March 27, 2023
Senate heard from Michael Crowder on two proposed revisions to policies: Graduate Student Organization Policy and Support for Research Travel and Teaching Policy. We heard from Associate Provost Carolyn Haynes on proposed revisions to the Course Repeat Policy and a new Co-operative Policy Proposal. We also a special reports from John Bowblis, Chair of the Benefits Committee and Dawn Fahner, Associate VP of Human Resources on changes to the Parental Leave Policy and increases in the cost of health plan premiums for 2024. We also had a special report from Randi Thomas, Vice President for ASPIRE including updates on the College@Elm.

A meeting of University Senate was held on March 30, 2020 via WebEx. Provost Osborne provided a COVID-19 and campus update. Bill Knight, Director of the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness presented information regarding potential changes to the academic program review process. Qihou Zhou, Chair and Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, introduced the proposed Robotics Engineering major. Paul Flaspohler, Associate Professor of Psychology and Process Coordinator for the sunsetting of the Family Science major, reported his findings. Likewise, Patrick Dowling, Chair and Professor of Mathematics and Process Coordinator for the creation of an Entrepreneurship department, reported his findings. Jeffrey Wanko, Associate Provost, briefly introduced proposed additional questions for the end of the semester course evaluations for the Spring 2020 semester.

An additional meeting of Senate was held on March 16, 2020 via WebEx. Provost Osborne provided a COVID-19 update. Shelly Jarrett Bromberg, Leighton Peterson, and John-Charles Duffy provided information to senators, and answered questions, about the proposed revisions to the Global Miami Plan requirements. Senators engaged in a discussion with Stacey Lowery Bretz regarding the Academic Program Evaluation Improvement Process.

Senators heard a preliminary presentation regarding potential program consolidations and a proposal on the recording of two minute speeches before Senate. Special reports were received regarding the Honors College and a proposal for a Center for Global Mental Health in Sports. Provost Mullenix provided brief updates.

Senators heard from Amy Bergerson, Associate Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education. Senators approved three resolutions. Provost Mullenix gave an update including a review of the Board of Trustees meeting, congratulating newly promoted and tenured faculty members, updating Senate about online proctoring at Miami, and a review of emergency procedures.

Senate welcomed and heard from Dr. Jason Lane, Incoming Dean, College of Education, Health & Society. Senate heard a proposed Sense of the Senate resolution from Dr. Zevi Miller, Chair, Faculty Rights and Responsibilities regarding revising Miami’s Statement on Professional Ethics and Responsibilities. Additionally, Dr. Dana Cox and Senator Troy Travis presented Covid Ad-Hoc Committee Reports and lead a discussion that will continue at the April 5, 2021, meeting.

Senators heard from Jaime Hunt, the newly appointed Vice President of UCM. An update from the Benefits Committee was given by the Chair, John Bowblis. Senators discussed two proposals from the Graduate School. Finally, Senator Tracy Haynes, Senate Liaison for the Council of Undergraduate Curriculum presented an overview of the curriculum approval process for new majors and degrees.

Senators approved several consent calendar items, including curriculum, and received a report from Terri Barr, Process Coordinator for the Department of Classics consolidation. Provost Osborne presented two Sense of the Senate resolutions regarding coronavirus. Stacey Lowery Bretz presented the proposed process for Evaluating, Improving, and Prioritizing Academic Programs.
