Medical Technologist

General Function

Oversees operations related to conducting moderately complex medical testing that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Directly supervises classified staff.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities—Essential Functions

  • Performs and/or supervises performance of a variety of moderately complex medical tests and microbiological procedures.
  • Supervises and trains laboratory personnel; sets testing schedule; assigns tasks; monitors and evaluates performance.
  • Monitors laboratory procedures conducted by staff to ensure appropriate quality standards; ensures that any necessary changes or corrections are made.
  • Oversees maintenance of equipment; monitors operation of equipment; ensures that appropriate temperatures are maintained in freezer, refrigerator, and incubator.
  • Maintains and signs Quality Control log, test, log, patient accession log, and biohazardous material documentation.
  • Researches and evaluates new equipment and materials; orders supplies.

Reporting Relationships

Direction Received: Reports to Health Service Administrator

Direction Given: Direct supervision of classified staff (Lab Technicians and Clerical Assistant)

Minimum Requirements

Requires a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology and two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Worker Characteristics

  • Knowledge of medical laboratory procedures and techniques
  • Supervisory skills
  • Computer skills

Working Conditions

Physical effort usually requires considerable walking, standing, and lifting of materials weighing 25 to 50 pounds. Somewhat unpleasant working conditions and health hazards.
